Hi, I’m Dr. Michelle Sands. I created Metabolic Mamma to give women like you – and me – everything we need to reach our fat-loss, health, energy, nutrition, and personal development goals while staying focused on the health and well-being of our families.
I am a mother, a wife, doctor, and athlete. I like to look good and feel good.
I need my energy to take care of my family, excel in my career, and be competitive in my sports. I love to travel and participate in humanitarian projects around the globe. I secretly dream of saving the world. I know that the healthier I am, the easier it will be to make my dreams a reality.
I used to think that diet and exercise where all you needed to achieve optimal health – boy was I wrong – and I learned the hard way. I have been fit for my entire adult life, but I haven’t always been healthy. In hindsight, I spent most of the last ten years looking and feeling like less that awesome.
I looked fit and healthy on the outside. I competed in Ironman triathlons, ultramarathons, and three day adventure races. I excelled in my career, volunteered in my spare time, and seemed to have it all. But my body was breaking down. I stopped getting my period. I struggled with insomnia, fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, and mood swings. Then something weird happened – I started having trouble managing my weight –even with crazy amount of exercise I was doing. As time went on, things got worse.
You see I was a personal trainer and a clinical nutritionist, so I felt like I knew all there was to know about health and fitness. I had the exercise part down. I was doing high intensity intervals and functional movements long before they became fashionable.
The nutrition was another story. As a clinical nutritionist, I learned how to teach people the food pyramid, low fat/high carb, and how to count calories. This is what I taught my clients, and what I followed myself. It seemed to work for me – I was an endurance athlete and Italian – that equals lots of pasta!
As I furthered my education, working towards my natural medicine degree, I started to see holes in the food pyramid recommendations. Lots of them. I also was exposed to over 100 different healing modalities from all over the world. Things like Traditional Chinese Medicine, Energy work, Light and Sound therapy, Qi Gong, Massage, Ayurveda, Reiki, and Yoga. Also included were hundreds of different dietary approaches to wellness as well as a broad spectrum of lifestyle practices. What I learned was that the body needs real whole foods, movement, rest, and a holistic approach to health and wellness.
The real breakthrough came from experimenting with and perfecting a system of functional medicine – I became my own guinea pig! I ran as many tests on myself as I could get my hands on. I studied under some of nation’s best doctors, medical researchers, biologists, and scientists. Finally, I found a combination of simple lab tests that allowed me discover what was going on with my hormones, immune system, digestion, detoxification, energy production and neurotransmitters.
I found that my adrenal glands were overloaded, my hormones were practically non-existent (which explained why I never got my period and couldn’t get pregnant). I have sensitivities some of my favorite healthy foods – ones that I ate all the time – like olive oil (hello, I’m Italian- we put olive oil on EVERYTHING!)
On top of all that, I found that I had an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in my intestines and the beginning of leaky gut. Using functional and naturopathic medicine, I was able to identify the root cause of these dysfunctions and then apply holistic grounding protocols of lifestyle to remove the irritants and support my body in healing itself.
My body got back in balance, my symptoms disappeared, and I felt better in my late thirties than I did in my twenties. I was exercising less and the weight dropped off effortlessly. Within the year, the biggest blessing of all happened. I got pregnant!!
I now have the most amazing baby boy anyone could ask for, he is a true blessing. Had I not have learned to use natural medicine to fix my health, Paxton may have never been born.
After Paxton was born, these same foundational principals helped me to avoid postpartum depression and bounce right back to my normal body and mood. In just 2 months, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight.
Now I want to share this with you – specifically if you are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are a mom with children of any age. I searched and searched before I realized that there is not a comprehensive life changing program to support moms (and momma hopefuls) by addressing their unique needs.
I’ve spent many years studying, researching, working alongside other practitioners and with clients, and personally guinea pigging everything from genetics and biology to stress reduction and detoxification to sex drive and weight loss to anti-aging, happiness and longevity – so you do not have to.
Moms need simple, cost effective, time-saving and natural solutions to heal body, mind, and spirit. Raising children and nurturing a family is a huge task. It truly does take a village to raise a child, and I hope you will be part of ours.

- I love all living things – except for bugs. Bugs really scare me. I am working on being more compassionate towards them.
- I can only see out of one eye at a time, so I have no depth perception (watch out if you are on the road with me!)
- I ran all the way around Lake Tahoe in 16 hours, then did a marathon the next day.
